GUEST POET 3
Mike Jenkins

I think the first time I met Mike was when we both shared a left with a young gentleman by the name of Dylan Moore, on our way to the Hay on Wye festival, perhaps in 2006. Practically all we talked about on the journey was Cardiff City FC, a conversational topic you might think of as pretty much inexhaustible, but we had a good go at exhausting it.

Since then, I’ve encountered Mike at various other events, including at the launch of his last Red Poets magazine in Blackwood, where he kindly allowed me to read.

Mike lives in Merthyr, and has done for 30 years. He has had several books published, the latest being a novel, The Fugitive Three which you can buy from Cinnamon HERE. His most recent book of poetry is Walking on Waste, from which the first two poems (right) are taken. This book is published by Carreg Gwalch, and purchasable HERE.

Forthcoming publications are The Climbing-Tree, a novella for teenagers (due out this autumn from Pont Books) and a book of open field poetry called Moor Music, due in 2010 from Seren.

Cardiff City do not yet have an “official” poet, but Mike considers himself to be the unofficial poet of the club, and in fact had a poem published in the last programme. I didn’t get to see it, so I can’t tell you which poem it was, but anyone interested would need to buy the programme for Cardiff v Nottingham Forest, 31 January 2009.

Mike has recently set up a website – www.mikejenkins.net – which you may care to visit for more info about February’s Guest Poet.
